IRS Help Line

The IRS help line is a service that a lot of people don't use when they are having a problem, or just have a question.  They just seem to gravitate towards asking a professional, or sometimes searching the Internet for the answer.

One thing you might be interested to know is that it is free.  They give you an 800 number, and you can use it for more than just asking questions.

The IRS help line can be used to apply for an employer identification number, receive help on taxes, and other business services you may need.

You can find out the answer to a lot of questions just by visiting their website at IRS.org.  Also the helpline phone number will be listed there. 

If you just need booklet publications you will also see links to those and any forms you may be needing.  The publications can be ordered and in most cases downloaded to your computer.  Any form you might need can also be downloaded for your convenience at home.

Although the IRS help line can provide a lot of help, you need to consider what type of help you need, before contacting them.  If you have a large tax problem, or owe lots of back taxes, you will probably need to either use the IRS tax advocate services, or contact a tax professional to help you with those types of problems.

Calling the IRS help line could be slow, and you should know that because of it's popularity, only about 75% of people end up talking to a live person the first time around.  So try the number, and if you don't get through right away, and need immediate help, then try a tax professional.  Otherwise leave a message or call back.

Take special care to get your tax questions and problems taken care of quickly.  Once you owe back taxes, the interest and penalties seem to snowball, and before you know it, everything is hitting you all at once.
